Introduction

So here's the thing, tiles are not only options for bathrooms and kitchens. Tiles are not only options for floors and backsplashes.

They are a surface decoration so they can be used on walls in any room of your home. If the colour, texture, weight and pattern work within your desired scheme there should be little to stop you. They are hard wearing and because most rooms in the home are not subject to steam and moisture, black mould and discolouration will not be your enemy.

1. Africa - Bakedtiles

This first selection is showing a 3-tile random pattern in a non-plumbing room transforming this into a feature wall. What a statement! On a photograph from a distance, you could be fooled into thinking it was wallpaper.

2. Par-Ker Natural Bremen - Porcelanosa

The second fabulous tile in this special lineup is, I believe, from the Bremen range a wood-effect quality porcelain tile. In this instance used in a contemporary setting behind a bed and illuminated with lighting for effect. This allows the occupant to really appreciate the intricate detailing of this tile and relief on the surface to replicate the warmth of wood. The format too at 20 x 120 cm appears to mimic a wood plank for contemporary or traditional styles.

3. Palm Springs, Turquoise - Porcelain Superstore

These handsome tiles have a special shape and a clean striking pattern. They are lovely, good looking with a “gorgeously tactile finish to channel that artisan vibe.” Rotate them, play with the patterns, make them yours and enjoy their adaptability.

4. Bougainvillier - Bisazza

Way too beautiful for the floor, although it is suitable for that application. Bougainvillier is sold by sq. m and can be adapted to any surface and to add to that the colours can be customized. Use it on a wall in a social area of the home - what a statement! Your guests will be impressed. There will be no need for artwork, this mosaic says it all. The design is sensational and the price may be too for some but you pay for originality and quality. It is suitable also for shower walls so you can imagine waking up to this after a good night’s sleep.

5. #39 Old Iron Hexagon - Bert & May

This very special hexagon tile is a handmade offering. Available in other colours this shade is dramatic and has a quite sensual chalky textured appearance. You can appreciate them more on the wall as you will not have to look down on them and it will make a contemporary statement. These encaustic tiles are designed in the UK and the techniques used to make them follow traditional methods.

6. Andalucia - Fired Earth

This sunny offering is not new but an old favourite of this company’s product range. It's summertime, the temperature is rising and we cannot wait to be holidaying abroad. Southern Spain is always a popular choice. These tiles are hand-painted and vibrant and should not be relegated to the kitchen or bathroom.

7. Eglise Rouen - Claybrook

Our next selection is a glazed porcelain beauty that is understated and pretty. Pop it on the walls of the two alcoves in a bedroom on either side of the fireplace instead of wallpaper. The pattern is neutral and the colour calming which could make a lovely statement. No sealing is required and comes in at a very competitive price. Love it.

8. Wanderlust Four Seasons - Minoli

Wow, wow, wow. This exceptional tile is striking. It almost presents like an acrylic painting but it is a tile from the Wanderlust range of contemporary tiles. A tile for installers that love what they do and are experienced working with large format tiles. It comes in at 120 cm wide x 278 cm long format. It is described as Frost Resistant so you can put it outside. Who is brave enough to install it on a Dining Room wall? Taking the limelight from your signature - Millionaires Cheesecake.

9. Sunset Patchwork - Otto Tiles

It was the pastel colours that caught my eye with these lovely encaustic cement tiles. Another very versatile tile that can be used indoors or outdoors on floors and walls. Check with your contractor that your walls can support the weight of the tiles before you get going. Added to that you can personalise the design, as the name suggests it is a patchwork design so arrange the 3 patterned tiles and 1 plain tile in whatever arrangement you and your tiler decide on.

Finally…

My first tile blog (7 stunning tiles to wow your bathroom) was one of the most popular of all my posts so I felt you would appreciate a second on this subject. The colours, textures, sizes and patterns seem to be endless so I completely understand the fascination. Floors, stairs, walls, furniture, patios, gardens, and fountains all benefit from the decoration of tiles. Your designer can source for you if you are unable to.

A quick note - you have a hundred or so colour choices for your grout lines (Mapei) or you can stick to the neutral colours your supplier suggests for you.
